The Ministry of Trade and Industry and in particular the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Malan Lindeque, were instrumental in awarding Camelthorn Brewing Company (Pty) Ltd our micro brewing license. The license was issued on the 8th of the 8th 2008. Exactly one year later we were ready to open our doors to the public and the market and this was celebrated by cracking the seal of a 10l keg of Weizen at an official endorsement function, which took place on Thursday, 6 August 2009 in our Tap Room.
This memorable moment was witnessed by Ms Hellen Amupolo, Mr Arthur Diedricks and Mr Simeon Kahauna from the Development Bank of Namibia as well as most of our investors and representatives of selected media houses.
For months now the Namibian thirsty beer throats have been teased and tantalised with media reporting and highlighting the countdown to this significant and momentous occasion in Namibia’s diverse and powerful beer history.
During his brief speech, Camelthorn Brewing Company CEO, Jörg Finkeldey, mentioned that smaller, limited manufacturing during the current global turmoil has changed the direction of developing products and services aimed at local markets, proving sustainable options. “International markets are suffering with import and export arenas collapsing and remerging, demonstrating Namibia’s 2030 Vision regarding manufacturing relevant and effective”, he stated.
Camelthorn Brewing Company’s Board aims to become one of the Country’s flagship investments and to connect Namibians to the international craft beer fraternity in a proactive manner, with well wishes already streaming in from the international industry players. Our microbrewery friendship network already reaches Russia, South Africa, America and Europe, propelling Namibia to the forefront of the International specialised beer crafting community.
David Nuyoma, CEO of DBN, conveyed the following message: “The DBN financed Camelthorn Brewing Company because it is a local manufacturer, introducing a new product to the market. Besides the jobs being created by Camelthorn Brewing Company, it also has a very progressive stance on training, which will contribute significantly to its own sustainability and skills transfer in a general sense. The latest technology in brewing equipment is also being used in the brewery, which is vital for quality assurance and control.” We regret that Mr Nuyoma could not witness this event in person, but he was ably represented by his senior management.
